How to Safely Dismount

Make sure the horse is standing still and then loosen the reins. Take both feet out of the stirrups and hold the pommel and reins with your left hand

Bend forward slightly and swing your right leg over the horse's back taking care not to hit them or drag your leg over them

Slide down gently making sure you land with bent knees to minimise ground shock. It is really important when you are dismounting to take BOTH feet out of the stirrups, and not leave one behind. If you keep one foot in - this will leave you in a very vulnerable position because if the horse moves off, your foot can become stuck from the awkward angle. By having both feet out of the stirrups it allows a safe and easy dismount
