How to Tie a Rope Halter

Many people tie the halter so it ends up with the end of the head piece pointing upwards. This tends to flick the horse in the face when they move. The reason that it's sometimes tied like this is that some think the knot will hold stronger, but in all my years tying it the other way, I've never had any problems. Also with my method the knot sits flat against the horse's face and the end can be tucked away neatly and safely
Take the end of the head piece and thread it towards you, through the loop of the halter. Make sure at this point that the halter is sitting snugly on the bridge of the nose and also under the chin

Holding the halter secure with your left hand, take the end with your right and make a D shape going upwards and threading it behind the head piece

Now thread the end through the middle of the D. Twist any excess length around the bottom of the halter to secure it. This makes sure that it doesn't flick up into the horse’s face when they move around. Make sure the halter still fits well on the horse's head. If not, undo it, readjust it and try again
