COMMENTS Tye is my beloved first horse and has been my most valued teacher in learning about and applying hoof care and also in developing my training methods. Even though I didn't know much about hooves when he first arrived and for a couple of years afterwards, it was glaringly obvious to me that Tye's hooves were becoming more and more unhealthy and dysfunctional.
Farrier trim 2004 - 2006
Tye received trims which a master farrier completed every 5 - 6 weeks for approximately two years. There was little communication or explanation and no recommendation of how often he should be trimmed. He had heels that were excessively high, which promoted a toe first landing. This inhibited extension of joints in the limb, placed stress on the tendons and ligaments, and incorrectly distributed weight onto the front area of his hooves - an area not designed to incur such extreme force. His hooves had a boxy appearance, that is the typical shape of a farrier trim. He appeared 'pidgeon toed' and placed weight on the inside area of his hooves which made them almost curve underneath him, with a flare on the outside.
Strasser trim 2006 - 2007
Tye's hooves were trimmed every 5 - 6 weeks for approximately a year with a Strasser trained and qualified professional. There was little communication, explanation or recommendations made and extremely poor service was encountered in this period. During this time he continued to be pidgeon toed, but his hooves were progressed to having low heels, although the trim was different every time, and his heels were sometimes left extremely high. The toes became increasingly excessively and worryingly long with a convex curve and dysfunctional, strange looking growth patterns. Because of the toe length, leverage forces on break over contributed to stress in the laminar/coffin bone connection, and moreso with the absence of a mustang roll.
HoofNZ trim - 2007
Tye's hooves were trimmed once by this practitioner and the shape was so dysfunctional and incorrect that I felt it was risking too much to retain their services for a second trim. The heels were left too high and in fact there was no heel, but just a curve to the untrimmed quarters. The toes were too long, and a flare at the coronet as well as an inch or so above the toe area was not commented on or attended to. There was almost a ground parallel coronet angle and the sole and hoof wall were almost untouched. Since his hooves were so dysfunctional, a more aggressive trim should have been applied.
Horse & Human Barefoot Hoof Trimming - Caroline Hannah 2007 onwards
I started to trim Tye's hooves mid 2007 after becoming increasingly disappointed with the trims he received, and frustrated with non responsiveness and poor communication encountered from various hoof care professionals.
The first gentle trims were applied and whilst his hooves would have progressed faster had I been more aggressive, it was a learning period for me, and I wished to be cautious. Since those early days I have persisted in learning an enormous amount about hoof anatomy and physiology along with receiving invaluable experience in trimming all kinds of hooves in all kinds of conditions. I have developed my own philosophies and methodologies based primarily on a wild hoof model, and apply these consistently in each trim I complete.
Tye's hooves progressed over the course of eight months from dysfunctional and pidgeon toed, to emanating strength, vitality and functioning perfectly. I will always be grateful for him, for without the experiences we had - I would not be where I am today.
